About The Book

Capella University, an online for-profit “school” has been beset with legal problems and caught in a large number of unethical practices in the recent past; including (but not limited to):

• The United States Department of Education, Office of the Inspector General, determined (2008) that "for the 2002-2003 through 2004-2005 award years, [Capella] University did not comply with the provisions of the law and regulations governing the return of Title IV, HEA program funds and FFEL and Pell disbursements."
• Capella University violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) on ten different counts (September 2007) and that the investigation is ongoing (2008) due to Capella’s continued refusal to comply with the law.
• Capella’s Director of Financial Aid, Timothy Lehmann, was caught (2007) accepting kickbacks from Student Loan Companies.
• Capella University was also caught paying kickbacks to the University of California, including the University of California, Irvine (UCI) where their Dean of Extended Education, Gary Matkin, entered into a deal with his personal friend, Michael Offerman, Capella’s President. The Los Angeles Times reported that, “"Any time you reduce the basis of recruitment to cash kickbacks or commission sales, the ability and willingness of recruiters to act in the interest of students goes downhill quickly."
• The Chronicle of Higher Education reported (2007) that former Capella University instructor, Sharon Bender, is being sued by a former student, on accusations of plagiarism.

The unethical and even illegal practices of Capella University, just seem to go on, and on, and on . . . This book has been created to expose the blatant dishonesty, unethical behavior, and/or outright lies told by Capella officials, employees, “learners” (Capella-speak for “students”) including: Kurt Linberg, Michael Offerman, Diane Stottlemyer, Karen Viechnicki, Jack Krichen, Brian Imholte, Vickie Cook, Shawn Ambrose (Capella Rocks), Juanita Ikuta, Lisa Bromenshenkel, Lisa Wheeler, Tamara Kuchar, Robert Evans, Brian Parrish, and many others. It contains many opinions, facts, and an extreme overabundance of parody and satire (which Capella University would have the world believe were presented as literal truths).

Capella Crimes has been published to expose the fact that Capella University’s own in-house attorneys, Greg Thom and Priscilla McNulty, have regularly engaged in a path of blatant deceit and grossly dishonest conduct and as have two of Capella’s attorneys, from the law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath (which Capella University, as a publicly traded corporation, has used to lobby Congress on their behalf), H. Christian L’Orange and Stella Fey Epling. In fact, this book was specifically created to highlight the fact that Capella University, Epling, and especially Chris L’Orange have lied to Federal Courts.
